Surveillance video: SUV stolen with kids inside

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Grand Rapids police say two kids are OK after the SUV they were in was stolen.

The Grand Rapids Police Department says the SUV was left running in the parking of the Bottle House on S. Division Avenue south of Burton Street when someone stole it shortly before 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Surveillance video from the liquor store shows the driver was away from the SUV for less than 15 seconds before two people hurried up, jumped inside and drove away.

About 20 minutes later and less than a mile away, the SUV was found near the intersection of Brown Street SE and Madison Avenue. The infant and toddler inside were still in the back seat and weren’t hurt.

“We had assisting agencies that were coming down to help us out so we had a lot of coverage, so thankfully we found at the children quite quickly,” GRPD Sgt. John Wittkowski said.

Police initially thought a recent parolee who lives nearby may be responsible, but that house was soon cleared.

Investigators are still looking for the suspects. Anyone with information about who they may be is asked to call GRPD at 616.456.3400 or Silent Observer at 616.774.2345.
