TYRONE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — State police are investigating after a teenager was killed and seven other people were injured in a crash near Kent City Wednesday.
The crash happened around 6:20 p.m. at the intersection of 17 Mile Road and Sparta Avenue in Tyrone Township, according to a Michigan State Police news release.
Investigators believe a 2003 Pontiac Vibe was heading northbound on Sparta Avenue when the driver failed to yield for a westbound 2020 Chevrolet Traverse. The impact caused the vehicles off the roadway, hitting a utility pole at the northwest corner of the intersection, the release said.
State police said an 18-year-old man who was inside the Vibe was pronounced dead at the scene. A second passenger was airlifted to the hospital in critical condition. A third passenger was seriously injured. The driver was taken to the hospital with injuries that are not considered life-threatening.
The four people who were inside the Traverse were taken to the hospital with injuries that state police said are not considered life-threatening.
MSP said it doesn’t appear alcohol was a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.
