KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Officers say one man was killed and another hurt in a shooting in Kalamazoo’s North Side.

It happened shortly 1 p.m. Thursday in the 1400 block of Princeton Avenue near Bessie Street. Neighbors told News 8 they heard several gunshots.

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety says officers were nearby and heard the shots.

They soon found an injured 23-year-old Kalamazoo man. Officers were seen giving CPR to one of the victims before medics arrived, according to witnesses. The victim was rushed to the hospital, where he died. His name wasn’t immediately released.

A second gunshot victim was found about a block away on N. Westnedge Avenue. That man, a 28-year-old from Kalamazoo, was hospitalized with injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

SWAT officers on the scene along Princeton could be heard asking someone to come out of a nearby home, but police said no suspect were in custody.

“We know there were a couple vehicles seen fleeing the area,” KDPS Assistant Chief David Boysen said.
