Ferndale — Firefighters battled an industrial equipment fire Wednesday morning at a train yard after an incident involving a crane.
The city, in an alert issued in the 10 a.m. hour, said Ferndale police and fire units were on the scene of the fire, which is in the area of Eight Mile and Fair Street.
The fire involved a crane at the CN Railroad yard, said Sgt. Baron Brown, a spokesman for the Ferndale Police Department. Crews worked to extinguish it for about an hour, he said.
CN Railroad, in a statement, said that “CN crews and local emergency services were on the scene of an incident at our facility in Ferndale…involving an intermodal container crane…There was no danger to public safety, no injuries, and no dangerous goods are involved.”
“There is no hazardous material exposure or threat to the community,” a statement from the city said.
Still, the city asked that people avoid the area “and allow our emergency professionals access to do their work.”
Ferndale Fire Department did not immediately respond to a request for information.
