Authorities: Suspect who opened fire on officers shot, hospitalized

MARSHALL, Mich. (WOOD) — Authorities say a suspect who shot at officers and was wounded when they returned fire has been arrested following a standoff in Marshall.

The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office says that a deputy and two Marshall police officers went to the house on W. Hanover Street near Cherry Street around 10:45 a.m. Friday to take the suspect to the hospital on a mental health court order.

When the suspect, a 30-year-old man, opened the door, he immediately opened fire. The officers returned fire and took cover. None of the officers were actually hit by a bullet.

A standoff ensued. Authorities eventually got the suspect on the phone, then went into the home before 2 p.m.

The suspect had been shot in the exchange of gunfire, so he was taken to a Kalamazoo hospital to be treated.

Michigan State Police are investigating.
