2 killed in Kalamazoo shootings; no arrests

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Police are investigating after two people were killed in two shootings in Kalamazoo Wednesday.

The first deadly shooting happened around 6 p.m. on Woodbury Avenue near the intersection of Ada Street in the Northside neighborhood.

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety said when officers arrived on scene, they found a man had been shot. He was taken to the hospital where they later died from his injuries.

He was identified Thursday as Dondreal Watkins, 29, of Kalamazoo.

Camilla Johnson has lived in the area for six years and saw the victim.

“When I came out, that boy was lying on the ground, pleading for his life,” Johnson said.

She says her home has four bullet holes from previous shootings.

“I’m in the crossfire. All I just want is the violence to stop,” Johnson said. “I didn’t ask for this.”

On Thursday, KDPS released surveillance photos of a car involved — apparently a late-model gray or silver Nissan sedan.

The second deadly shooting happened around 7:30 p.m. on Cameron Street near the intersection of E Stockbridge Avenue in the Edison neighborhood.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found a gunshot victim. The victim was taken to the hospital where they later died from their injuries, according to a KDPS news release.

Police have identified the victim as 28-year-old Devante Coleman. A second victim was found with injuries police said are not considered life threatening, the release said.

Mercedes Spain, Coleman’s girlfriend, says they had been together for seven years and have a 6-year-old daughter.

“He was a family person and he would give you the shirt off his back. He loved everybody. He just wanted to see everybody prosper in life. He was an amazing person. He just ended up losing his life by being around the wrong people at the wrong time,” Spain said.

According to Spain, Coleman was planning to move to Missouri to be with his family again. Spain relocated to St. Louis a year ago and had been coming to Kalamazoo monthly so her boyfriend could see his daughter.

“We were all just expecting him to walk through the door. I was expecting him to hug me to kiss me. We just wish this was a nightmare, you know, it was a dream,” Spain said.

Police released photos of a vehicle believed to be involved in the shooting. It’s described as a silver/gray, late model Dodge Caravan with black rims.
