Horseback rider dies after crash in Allegan county

LEIGHTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Police in Allegan county are investigating a deadly crash involving horseback riders.

It happened around 9:30 p.m. Friday on 146th Avenue.

The Allegan County Sheriff’s Office tells News 8 when they arrived on scene, they discovered that three horses, each with a rider, were traveling westbound on 146th Avenue, and a car also driving westbound crashed into two of the horses.

Police say one of the riders, 26-year-old Brittany Fender from Schoolcraft, was taken to the hospital and died from her injuries.

The other rider who was hit had minor injuries and refused treatment.

Both horses that were hit died at the scene according to police.

Investigators say the driver of the car, a 22-year-old woman from Byron Center, did not get hurt.

Police are still looking into the cause of the crash.
