Man found dead after Grand Rapids house fire

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A man was found dead after a house fire in Grand Rapids Sunday morning.

Firefighters were called to the scene on Oakwood Avenue NE north of Knapp Street around 11 a.m. on a report of smoke rising from the house. After dousing the fire, firefighters searched the home and found person dead.

His father identified him to News 8 as Todd Cappendyk, 41, of Grand Rapids.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Authorities said have not said whether the fire is considered suspicious, but did say the Grand Rapids Police Department’s Major Case Team and the fire department’s arson investigators are looking into it.

Cappendyk’s father said Cappendyk was paralyzed from the chest down and used a wheelchair. His father said he was not given any information about the cause of the fire or whether his son was trapped.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine precisely how Cappendyk died.
