GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — An armed robbery suspect was arrested after an hourslong standoff in Grand Rapids.
The Grand Rapids Police Department said officers were called around 10:30 p.m. Thursday to the area of Kalamazoo Avenue SE and Langley Street SE, where a man armed with a long gun robbed a liquor store and then ran away.
As patrol officers and members of the Special Response Team — GRPD’s SWAT — were looking for the man, they heard gunshots and tracked the suspect to an area behind some businesses.
Officers tried to get the man to give himself up. They say he threatened to harm himself and said he wanted the officers to shoot him. He also fired shots in to the air.
GRPD said considering the danger, SRT “devised a multi-faceted, less-lethal arrest plan.” They would not say what that means, except to say flash-bangs were used.
The suspect was taken into custody shortly before 3 a.m. Friday.
No one was hurt.
